  • Program

    Q: What is the difference between “Executive Master”, “Master of Advanced Studies”, and “Master”?

    A: Executive education means that we train professionals who already have substantial experience. The typical participant is a mid-career executive preparing for the next level of his/her career. What differentiates an executive program is that it assumes participants can bring a number of years of professional experience to the program.The MAS/MBA is the only academic degree awarded in continuing education. The programme offers comprehensive training in a specific field and can either give access to higher qualification in one's profession or lead to a new profession. The programme lasts at least two years and comprises courses, independent study, and a master's thesis.

    Q: Am I eligible to join the Masters of Advanced Studies program?

    A: If you are an established professional with at least 3 years of relevant work experience under your belt in the humanitarian sector and a university degree, it is worthwhile to contact the MAS HLM office sending us your CV .

    Q: Why the University of Svizzera Italiana (USI)?

    USI has partnered with major organizations in the humanitarian sector and hired professors from internationally renowned universities to offer an innovative program. In the Swiss context of international cooperation, our University is a young and dynamic reality that is not restricted by organizational inertia or bureaucratic-self preserving interests. USI is willing to commit resources to address pressing issues and to make a difference in the humanitarian sector.

     

  • Curriculum

    Q: What is ECTS?

    A: ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System which was originally set up to facilitate the transfer of credits between universities in different European countries. Today however, it is a student-centered system based on the workload required to achieve the objectives of a program. The MAS HLM program corresponds to 60 ECTS, representing the equivalent of a full year of academic study. The Program amounts to a total workload of 1800 hours, consisting of 600 hours of instruction, 480 hours dedicated to the thesis and 720 hours of individual work preparing for classes, reviewing for and taking exams.

    Q: What is a module?

    A: The program is separated into four modules, each one covering an area of study: Organizational and Strategic Management, Supply Chain Management, Project Management and Disaster and Emergency Management. Students are also required to take two research methods courses and write a thesis in the humanitarian area, applying some of the methodologies/frameworks developed in the program.

    Q: What is a block?

    A: The program is divided into 7 blocks. Six blocks are two weeks long sessions and the last one is where students are invited to present their thesis.

    Q: How long will it take to get my MAS HLM degree?

    A: Classes start in January and last until October of the following year.

    Q: What is the schedule of a typical class day?

    A: Classes typically meet from 08:30 hrs to 17:30 hrs.

    Q: What happens if I can’t make it to a block?

    A: You will need to recover the block during the following year.

    Q: What happens if I can’t take an exam?

    A: If you miss an exam, you will receive a failing grade. In exceptional cases, it is possible to reschedule an exam up one day before the original exam date.

    Q: What happens if I fail an exam?

    A: If you fail an exam, you will be asked to repeat it during the following block.

    Q: What is the class size?

    A: We can accept a maximum of 26 participants per year.

    Q: What is the predominant job function of participants when entering the Program?

    A: Almost half of the participants are in the humanitarian logistics functions (50%). The remainder of the participants is in project management (22%), health management (11%), freelance and others. Find more statistics.

    Q: What is the class mix?

    A: Most of our participants come from international NGOs (28%), UN agencies (28%) and Local NGO’s (22%). Corporate sector (17%) and GOs (6%) are also represented. Click here to see statistics.

    Q: How many years professional experience do participants have?

    A: On average, our participants have 9 years of work experience.

    Q: If my profile does not match that of the other participants, is it worthwhile to apply?

  • Accreditation

    Q: Is MAS HLM an accredited program?

    A: Accreditation is very important to ensure a standard of education is being upheld. MAS HLM is accredited through the Rector’s Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS). CRUS is an organization representing all Swiss Universities and maintains relationships with other accredited universities outside of Switzerland.

     

  • MAS HLM experience

    Q: Are there any extra-curricular activities?

    A: MAS HLM is a demanding program but you will have free time during the evenings. There is a wide range of things to do in Lugano, no matter what the season. MAS HLM organizes a social events per module. Participants and organizers often get together to play sport or do some sightseeing.

     

  • Career advancements

    Q: Will future employers recognize an MAS HLM diploma?

    A: The MAS HLM is the first of its kind in Europe and since its inception, has been built considering needs and requirements explicitly expressed by its Board of Direction, where experts and practitioners from most well-known organizations sit together. Future employers will recognize an MAS HLM degree as a commitment to investing in your future, and a desire to improve your logistic and managerial skills in a strategic framework.

    Q: What will I bring back to my organization?

    A: What you will learn during the program is directly applicable to the professional world. You and your colleagues will notice both during and after the program that you will be bringing new ideas, methods and insights back from the classroom into the workplace.

    Process - Requirements


    Q: I don’t have any of the pre-requisites for entry. Can I still apply?

    A: In addition to the admission requirements, we evaluate applications based on professional achievementS and organizational responsibility. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the MAS HLM office to find out if MAS HLM could be the right choice for you.

    Q: Do I need a VISA for entering in Switzerland?

    A: The Federal Office for Migration (FOM) offers a list of countries which need a visa for entering in Switzerland. The visa application form can be directly downloaded from the FOM website. The form must be presented to the closest Swiss embassy in the home country of the applicant, which will process the visa application and advise whether additional documents (travel documents, letters of invitation from your host, travel insurance, declaration of guarantee, etc.) are required.The MAS HLM office will assist you through the process and can issue an appropriate letter of invitation for your case.

    Process - Costs


    Q: When is payment due?

    A: The payment of tuition and fees is divided into three installments. The first installment of 1.000 CHF within 30 days of acceptance. The second installment of 7.000 CHF is due by December 31st of the year previous to the start of the program; the rest of the amount is due by December 31st of the first year of the program.

    Q: Can tuition and fees be paid in one installment?

    A: We do accept payment in one installment; however most participants and organizations prefer to divide the payment into three installments, spread out over the 22-months period.

    Q: What is your cancellation policy?

    A: If you withdraw before the second installment deadline, payment of only the first installment is required. After this time, full payment of all fees and tuition is required.

    Q: Do I have to get full financial support from my employer to enter the program?

    A: Full financial support is not a pre-requisite for entry. If your employer does not wish to offer full financial assistance, maybe they would be prepared to meet you half-way by offering partial support. This could mean paying for travel expenses or accommodations, for example.

    Q: I am not financially supported by my employer, do I have payment options?

    A: You have the option of spreading out your payments over more installments. Please contact the MAS HLM office for more specific details.

    Q: What types of payment are accepted?

    A: As with most organizations in Switzerland, we operate on a bank transfer system. We will send you an invoice with the relevant details for the transfer. We do not accept checks or credit cards as forms of payment.

    Q: What is included in the program fee?

    A: The tuition and fees that the participant must pay to participate in the MAS HLM cover costs of teaching, photocopied material distributed in class, and exam fees. The participant is responsible for paying expenses for accommodation and travel.

    Q: Do you provide any scolarhip?

    A: Unfortunately, at the moment we don't have funding to support meritorious students. You can contact the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) to receive support for your studies in Switzerland.

    Process - Financial support


    Q: What is the best way to approach my employer for financial support?

    A: Each situation is different, but in general it is a good idea to start early and have a clear plan for how the program can benefit both you and your company.

    Q: When is the deadline?

    A: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so it is a good idea to start early with the procedure. The applications deadline is October 31st.

    Q: What if I miss the deadline?

    A: It is always worthwhile to contact the MAS HLM office to see if there are still places available.

    Q: What should my motivational essay be about?

    A: Your essay is a letter of motivation which demonstrates your reasons for returning to study, what you hope to accomplish with a diploma, what your participation can bring to the program and your general expectations for the future after MAS HLM.

    Q: Where do I get my academic transcripts?

    A: The institution where you got your initial degree should be able to provide you with an official transcript of study.

    Organization’s space


    Q: Why should I send an employee to MAS HLM? Why not an MBA?

    A: After the first week of lessons, a MAS HLM participant, as well as colleagues, will almost instantly notice new ideas and methods coming back into the workplace. It is this almost instantaneous return on investment which encourages employers to send their employees to MAS HLM and is often what drives participants to do the program in the first place.

    Q: Do I have to pay the whole tuition fee?

    A: How much an employer decides to financially support an employee is at the discretion of the organization and the budget available.

    Q: Can I speak to an employer who has already sponsored an employee to get some advice?

    A: Certainly! Just get in contact with the MAS HLM office and we will introduce to you to a previous sponsor who can give you the ins and outs of sponsoring a top-notch employee.

    Q: How much time away from work will the candidate need?

    A: In order for you, the company and the participant to maximize the effect of the MAS HLM program, we suggest giving your employee 20% of time off work. The participant/candidate will need your full support and understanding during the program.

    Q: Should I meet with the manager of the program?

    A: It is a good idea to meet with the manager of the program before you start the application process to get a feel for the program and to discuss if MAS HLM is right for you.

    Q: What makes MAS HLM faculty so special?

    A: The MAS HLM faculty is chosen from the best in their field of expertise. They are closely linked to the humanitarian world, working in both research and consulting, giving them a contemporary edge to the theories they impart. The faculty comes from all over the world to teach in the MAS HLM program, offering participants a unique insight into supply-chain strategies and strategic management themes.

     

  • Locations

    Q: How do I get to the university?

    A: The University is a ten minute walk from the city center.

    Q: Where is the nearest international airport?

    A: Milano Malpensa is forty-five minutes by car from Lugano and is served by all the major international airline carriers. There is a frequent shuttle service that runs from Lugano train station to Malpensa. Alternatively, there is a smaller airport six kilometers outside of Lugano which is served by local airlines. These fly mainly to Zürich.

    Q: Will I need a car?

    A: No, Lugano is a relatively small city and the public transport system is efficient and will get you to where you need to go. If you want to bring a car, parking is available on campus in the USI parking lot. If you would like to rent a car, rental car agencies can be found in the center of town.
